Chapter 16.

One thing you could say about the Killmaidens, was they weren’t too subtle about things.

The manor was near a town in the eastern region of Umbrica, where huge dark forests and ragged mountains were the norm. The town’s name was Oberglistershire, and the manor itself was several hours outside it, reached only by a small road that ran through the deep forest, where the mangled trees were skeletal fingers twisting over the path, stripped bare by winter..

The gate to the Killmaiden home seemed to pop out of nowhere, and was a wrought iron thing of twisting metal worked in patterns like thorn bushes, and beyond them lay the manor itself.

It loomed. That was the only way to describe it. The place was a sprawling, dark gothic mass of architecture that seemed to cling to the cliffs like some predatory lizard. Square towers rose from the main buildings, defined by sharp, angular corners and tall eaves. Gargoyles leered from crenulations, and a literal moat flowed around the property. Overall, it looked more like a prison or sanitorium than a home. The fact that many of the windows had bars over them wasn’t helping things.

“This is where your family lives?” Ashlyn said, verbalizing my thoughts.

“Yeah,” Kensie sighed fondly. “Home sweet home.”

She stepped up to the gates and touched them, and I drew back as the metal twisted and flowed, forming a face like a woman’s whose hair was made of thorn bushes. “Well well!” the gate golem said in a voice like a rusty hinge that made me wince. “If it isn’t young Kensington come home.”

“Hello, Gate,” Kensie said. “May we pass?”

“You know the price, of course,” the gate purred and opened its mouth, teeth of iron spikes emerging.

Kensie rolled her eyes but pulled off her glove and pricked her finger on the teeth. The gate’s face closed its mouth, humming. “Mmm. Perfect. Welcome back, Kensington. Your family is most eager to say hello.”

Kensie tucked her hand back into her glove as the metal face unwound itself, the gate giving a creaking groan as it swung open, admitting us onto the snowy grounds. Grabbing her suitcase, Kensie flashed a gleeful smile our way. “C’mon!” she cried, bounding towards the place. “Right this way!”

“Do we have to?” Ashlyn asked, looking at the looming edifice of a building with clear foreboding.

“I think it has a delightful rustic charm,” Erina said. “In fact, many Umbrican homes are of similar design, dating back to the Crypt Wars, during which the power of the vampire lords were broken in Umbrica, and the state freed from their lingering dominion. Such bulwarks were built to keep watch should the dead lords ever rise again.”

“And uh, have they?” Hexie asked.

“Not lately,” Erina said.

“A mercy to us all I’m sure,” I said, grabbing my bags and heading through the gate after Kensie. After a moment the others followed, and we made our way towards the black manor.

We stopped at the door and Kensie gave the knocker a few, firm smacks against the ancient oak.
